In an 809 area code scam, businesses usually receive a message telling them to call a phone number with an 809, 284 or 876 area code. The person who receives the message assumes the number is a typical 3-digit U.S. area code; however the number is actually a phone number in Canada or the Caribbean. The caller is then charged international call rates. Unfortunately, the business does not find this out until they receive their bill.
